Lexapro (escitalopram) Lawyer

Lexapro, a popular pharmaceutical used in the treatment of depression and General Anxiety Disorder (GAD), has been linked to an array of serious side effects. Lexapro and Serotonin Syndrome

In July of 2006, the FDA issued an alert warning that Lexapro may cause serotonin syndrome. Lexapro and similar medicines called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), when combined with other migraine medicines, can cause this life-threatening condition.

Serotonin syndrome symptoms include:

  • Restlessness
  • Hallucinations
  • Loss of coordination
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Elevated body temperature
  • Changes in blood pressure
  • Overactive reflexes
  • Diarrhea
  • Coma
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

If you’re a Lexapro user and have been diagnosed with serotonin syndrome, contact the Maher Law Firm today. An experienced Lexapro lawyer will explain your legal options.

Lexapro and Birth Defects

Also in July of 2006, the FDA announced the results of a study examining the use of antidepressants during pregnancy by mothers of babies born with a serious condition called persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN).

Newborns with PPHN suffer from abnormal blood flow through the heart and lungs, resulting in insufficient oxygen supply for their bodies. PPHN is a life-threatening condition. The study found babies whose mothers took SSRIs 20 weeks or later into their pregnancies were 6 times more likely to have PPHN than babies whose mothers did not take antidepressants during pregnancy.

Of course a Lexapro lawsuit can’t undo the suffering your family has had to endure. But with the help of a Maher Law Firm Lexapro lawyer, you can hold those responsible for your baby’s pain liable for their negligence. You may also be entitled to compensation.

Lexapro and Suicides

In October 2004, the FDA issued a public health advisory directing all antidepressant drug manufacturers to revise their product labeling to include boxed warning and expanded warning statements that alert healthcare providers to an increased risk of suicidality (suicidal thinking and behavior) in children and adolescents being treated with these medications. Lexapro-maker Forest Laboratories, Inc. has since added a black box warning to Lexapro’s prescribing information in response to the FDA advisory.

In June 2005, the FDA issued a public health advisory announcing that several recent scientific publications suggested the possibility of an increased risk for suicidal behavior in adults being treated with antidepressant medications, such as Lexapro. The FDA highlighted that adults taking antidepressants (particularly those being treated for depression) should be watched closely for worsening depression and increased suicidality. Monitoring these patients is especially important when treatment begins and when doses are increased or decreased. The FDA is working closely with antidepressant manufacturers to fully evaluate the risk of suicidality in adults treated with these medications.

Lexapro Lawsuits

It’s not uncommon for pharmaceuticals to be associated with adverse effects or serious side effects. However, drug manufacturers and sellers have certain responsibilities to the public, including:

  • Exercising reasonable care in drug development, manufacturing, inspection, and labeling.
  • Informing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the public of any side effects.
  • Advertising in a truthful and non-misleading way.

As a consumer and patient, you have the right to trust that your medication is safe. This is not always the case. When a pharmaceutical company acts negligently, its actions can result in serious side effects. Victims however, may have a remedy by bringing a product liability claim against the drug’s maker.

Well-versed in the product liability laws that protect consumers, our Lexapro attorneys have handled countless lawsuits involving potential harmful pharmaceuticals. To discuss your claim, contact a Maher Law Firm Lexapro lawyer today.
