Marissa Smeyne’s experience with nursing home care goes back well before law school. After earning her undergraduate degree in health sciences from Towson State University in 1994, Ms. Smeyne spent the next seven years working as an admissions director at several Maryland nursing homes. It gave her a hands-on, insider’s view of the industry that has proved invaluable in her law practice today, which focuses on elder abuse and nursing home neglect.
After earning her Juris Doctor degree in 2003 from Western State University College of Law in Fullerton, California – where she won the school’s Witkin Award for the highest grade in Evidence – Ms. Smeyne litigated nursing home and assisted living abuse and neglect cases in the California office of Wilkes & McHugh. She has also practiced at The Garcia Law Firm in California.
Ms. Smeyne is admitted to practice in Florida, California, and before the Federal District Court for the Central District of California. At The Maher Law Firm her practice has expanded to also include medical malpractice, which is closely related to elder abuse, and general liability.
Ms. Smeyne’s involvement with health care issues extends beyond her daytime hours. An active volunteer with the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, she helps educate the public at seminars and other events, served on the California chapter’s advocacy board, and ran her first half marathon to raise funds and awareness.
