Maher - PartnerIn the 23 years since Steve Maher received his law degree from the University of Southern California, he has handled literally hundreds of cases involving personal injury, medical malpractice, wrongful death, product liability, dangerous drugs and medical devices, automobile negligence, patent infringement, class actions and antitrust.

He was named to the “Top 100 Trial Lawyers” for 2007, 2008 and 2009 by The American Trial Lawyers Association; and is “AV” rated by Martindale-Hubbell – its highest rating. He has been named by Law & Politics as one of the top 5% of lawyers in the State of Florida, and featured in Florida Super Lawyer Magazine from 2007 through 2009. He is also rated as “Superb” (10.0 out of 10.0) by AVVO.com legal ratings. He is the recipient of the Eagle Talon Award by the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers, as well as the 2001 FLAG Award by the Florida Lawyers Action Group.

Mr. Maher’s extensive experience includes many multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements on behalf of his clients. He was honored to be named as a lead counsel in one of the “Top 100 Verdicts of 2006″ by VerdictSearch (a $25,000,000.00 jury verdict). He was also lead trial lawyer in what is believed to be the one of the largest medical malpractice jury verdicts in the State of Florida for the wrongful death of a child ($10,000,000.00).  In March of 2010, he received a $6,000,000.00 verdict from a Philadelphia jury in an elder abuse and neglect case against a hospital and nursing home which resulted in the formation of a large infected bedsore.  It is believed that this is the largest verdict against a nursing home in Pennsylvania.

Mr. Maher is heavily involved in pharmaceutical cases involving injuries caused by dangerous and defective drugs. He was appointed by the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey to the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee of the Multidistrict Litigation involving the cholesterol-lowering drug Vytorin (In Re: Vytorin/Zetia Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation, MDL Docket No. 1938). He was also appointed by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois to serve on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee of the Multidistrict Litigation involving the birth-control drugs Yaz and Yasmin (In Re Yasmin and YAZ (Drospirenone) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation, MDL Docket No. 2100.

Mr. Maher also practices Antitrust Litigation. He was also appointed by the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania as Co-Lead Counsel on behalf of the indirect purchaser for resale class in the price-fixing antitrust class action against the chocolate industry, currently pending in that Court (In Re: Chocolate Confectionary Antitrust Litigation, MDL Docket No. 1935).

In 2007, Mr. Maher was appointed by the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida to a three-year term on that Court’s Local Rules Advisory Committee.

Mr. Maher maintains a national practice, and is licensed to practice law in 8 states (California, Florida, Arizona, Texas, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, New Mexico) as well as the District of Columbia. He is also admitted to practice in numerous Federal Courts, including the United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit; the United States District Court for the Southern, Northern, Eastern and Central Districts of California; the United States District Court for the Southern and Middle Districts of Florida; the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania; the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania; the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey; and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. He has also been admitted pro hac vice in several other Federal Courts.

Mr. Maher is also involved in several organizations involved in protecting our constitution’s right to trial by jury. He is an Eagle Member of the Florida Justice Association (formerly, the Association of Florida Trial Lawyers), and has been a member of that organization’s board of directors. He has served as chair of FJA’s Sovereign Immunity Task Force, as well as acted as a trustee for the Florida Lawyer’s Action Group. He is member of the Leader’s Forum of the American Association for Justice (formerly, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America), as well as Co-Chair of the Yaz-Yasmin Litigation Group, and has served as that organization’s NLD Publications Chair, as well as various other committees over the years. He has also lectured extensively throughout the United States on personal injury law and trial advocacy.
